About The Event
Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is the full Moon day that is dedicated to the Guru, the imparter of knowledge.
The Guru is a Tatva - “principle” like an ever flowing sea of water which reaches, through various cities, nourishing various regions and beings.
The word ‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘Ru’ denotes the one who removes it. Guru is thus the remover of darkness, which can be in many forms like ignorance, misery, and desire. Guru provides one the light of knowledge and abundance, with the freedom of spirit.
Guru Purnima is observed in recognition of such a significant role that a Guru plays in shaping the life of an individual. Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full Moon day during the Lunar month of Ashada, which corresponds to the month (June–July).
As per ancient scriptures states, Guru Purnima is thought to be the day Lord Shiva transferred his knowledge to seven followers or “saptarishis”. As a result, Lord Shiva came to be known as a guru as well. Ever since, we have celebrated Guru Purnima in the honor of both lord Shiva, his teachings and the seven saptarishis.
Holy scriptures describe the importance of Gurus and the extraordinary bond between a Guru and his Shishya (disciple). An age-old Sanskrit phrase 'Mata Pitah Guru Daivam', says that the first place is reserved for the mother, second for the father, third for Guru and fourth for God. Thus, Guru has been given a higher place than God.
